9 Ways to Improve your Life

In a world that is full of societal distractions, it can become easy to lose sight of ourselves. No matter what we do to stay focused, the distractions just come faster, louder, and brighter than we can manage. Entertainment, social media, and marketing are the biggest distractions of them all. They have a way of begging for our attention and focus. Doing so, makes us lose sight of our much more important tasks.
To improve one’s life, it would be wise to find and adopt key principles to help live a less distracted life.
These distractions are easy to notice. So they should not be too hard to eliminate. There is not a day that goes by where a person does not realise they have spent too much time watching TV, playing video games, or scrolling through their news feeds.
Though these distractions are loud and clear, there are others that are not as easily noticed. There are no flashing lights or loud whistles when they come around but can cause more damage to our lives. They come in the form of seeking perfection in everything, living in regret of the past, valuing materialistic possessions, and comparing ourselves to others.
Luckily, it is not the end of the world and we can do some things to take back our lives. Consider trying these nine steps and watch as life becomes more easy for you.
Focus on the Present
Once a situation has become a part of your past, there is nothing that you can do to change it. The best thing you can do is realise what you could have done differently and learn from it. Learning from your mistakes is worth much more than reliving them. So unless you have a time machine hidden somewhere in your basement, focus on what you can change, apologise if necessary, and move on with your life.
Get More Sleep
Sleep is a very vital part of our health. Getting enough of it can improve our memory, boost our immune systems, reduce our risk of getting cancer, and controlling our appetite which can lead to weight control. I understand that with all the many distractions that life has, getting more sleep can be easier said than done. Just find the source of your sleeplessness and get rid of it. So say goodbye to that cell phone that sleeps by your bed.
Set Realistic Goals
Ever heard the idiom “don’t bite off more than you can chew”? It was made for those of us who tend to take on more than we can actually handle. Setting realistic goals can have a great impact on our mental health. They can be used to aid us in pursuing our dreams or motivate us to stay productive. When those goals are unrealistic, they can leave you feeling like a failure or worse causing major stress. Don’t do that to yourself.
Practice Gratitude
With all that we become exposed to regularly, it can be easy for anger to get our attention instead of gratitude. Since anger has a place in everyone’s life and is usually the go to emotion, we tend to lose sight of the many things we do have to be grateful for. Instead of feeling bad about what you don’t have, start taking note of what you do.
See the Positive Side
The continuous practice of gratitude can lead you to be able to see the positive side of a situation. Gloomy weather can be a perfect time to update your wardrobe or play with your kids. Being stuck in traffic can be a great opportunity to get some much needed “me time”. Your little one spilling juice on you before leaving on a date can be the best excuse for pulling out that sexy dress that stays hidden in the back of your closet. It is as simple as that.
Carefully Choose Your Friends
This is a big one because those who are closest to you are usually the ones who are rooting for you to fail. Not only that, you can also find yourself being the only one in your circle who wants something out of life and is actually taking steps to make it happen. Your friends can have a strong impact on your emotions, everyday habits, and the actions that you make. So give that power to true friends, not frenemies.
Laugh More
If you are like me, you have been guilty of taking life too seriously. Frustrating situations that usually lead to this are a slow internet connection, people driving slow in the fast lane, or that annoying coworker who continues to mispronounce your name. Once again, these are situations that we cannot control. Instead of letting them frustrate you, laugh about them. Soon you will begin to relax more, build rapport with others, and see a reduction in stress and blood pressure. Not too bad for something that comes free.
Unplug Once a Week
Technology was created to make our lives easier. With the addictiveness to it growing so rapidly, we are losing skills that are more valuable to us. Not many people are able to get around, communicate with others, or remember a loved ones phone number without their smartphone. Technology has made life easier but at the expense of us not using our brains. Unplug at least once a week and see how easy you can make your life.
Keep Your Brain Sharp
It may be true that you can’t stop time but you can improve the quality of life. Keeping your mind sharp and vibrant is one of the many ways of achieving this goal. Exercise does help with improving our overall health but some exercises don’t require a gym membership. Meditation can be useful in decreasing stress, deep listening can improve communication, and walking outdoors can improve your balance and foot-eye coordination. So go ahead and get those neurones moving. Just like you want your legs to stay strong, you should want the same for your brain.
